Chippewa High School Boys Tennis
Coach- John Galehouse
If Chippewa’s boys tennis team is going to repeat at Northeast Tennis Conference champs, they will rely heavily on their ‘Big Four.’
Senior Trenton Letz, juniors Jeffrey Holt, BJ Galehouse and Connor Hutzell each bring back a wealth of experience that the Chipps will need if they’re going to capture a second straight NET crown.
“I think, every though everyone will be in new positions this year, these guys will provide a good example to the newer players on what to expect during the season,” said Chippewa coach John Galehouse, who piloted the Chipps to a 13-2, 7-0 record last season. “It will certainly be a challenge to defend our NET title with the changes in the lineup, but I’m confident that all the players will give it their best effort when they are on the court and that’s all I can ask of them.”
After a breakout sophomore season in which he went 16-4, captured the NET title at second singles in both the regular season and tournament, and won a pair of matches in sectional play, Holt returns and will assume the role as Chippewa’s top singles player.
While Holt looks to build on his first-year success, teammate BJ Galehouse moves to the second singles spot after holding down the first doubles team a year ago.
It will be an adjustment for the 11th grader, but one that coach Galehouse feels will be a lot of on-the-job training.
“BJ will need to adapt quickly to the level of play at first singes and to singles play itself,” the coach said of Galehouse, who has been a mainstay at doubles the last two seasons. “I anticipate that his game will improve dramatically this year, but pulling out wins consistently will be a challenge.”
Letz and Hutzell might be strangers to the first doubles position, but they are far from unfamiliar with teaming up together on the court. The tandem of three-year starters were 15-2 last season, which included an NET postseason tournament championship.
Combine that experience with a fresh-faced duo at second doubles in sophomores Adam Filo and Brannon Teets, something that has coach Galehouse feels can carry Chippewa to great things this spring.
“Trenton and Connor were very successful at second doubles last year. Moving up to first doubles, however, will be a challenge,” he said. “If they can play up to their skill level and minimize bad spells, they should have a good season.
“Both (Adam and Brannon) are first-year starters. They will improve quickly once they get some matches under their and they have the necessary skills to have a lot of success.”
Senior Spencer Lindquist and junior Elijah Kugler are expected to fill the second and third singles spots, respectively, while juniors Thomas Mautz and Jeremy Farber could see some court time as well, according to coach Galehouse.
